This book examines the history of the Fell Pony from Roman times when the stamp of pony we now know originated. The varied and changing uses of the Fell over the centuries are examined. How the breed survived the increasing mechanization of the twentieth century to take its place as an all-round riding and driving pony is examined.

The Fell pony's performance capabilities are assessed including its unique characteristics. the author, Clive Richardson, was a successful exhibitor of Fell ponies and won innumerable championships at the national level before retiring from showing to concentrate on judging and writing. He has written two previous books on the breed and has produced a compilation of Fell pony bloodlines from 1898 to 1980 and has judged in the UK and internationally.
