October 2007
This year marked the 40th consecutive
year for the USEF Pony Finals National Championships and they
were held August

popular annual event has become an important goal for many young
pony riders across the country. The championships include the
pony hunter finals, the green hunter pony finals, the USEF pony
medal and the Pony Jumper finals. It's a very special,
family-oriented show where kids have fun and enjoy the facility
and the camaraderie developed over the course of events. Its
popularity is shown in the number of exhibitors - a total of 697 entries that included 536 ponies and 420
riders.

This year, 10 year old Lillie Keenan made Pony Finals
history by sweeping all three divisions of the pony hunter
finals. In the smalls, she won on Heritage Farms Blackberry,
in the mediums she won on the Chanconette Farm's New Forest pony,
Enchanted Forest, and in the larges, she piloted
Vanity Fair, owned by Adrienne Sterlicht, to the championship. Besides the major
championships, other organizations give prizes at pony finals
including the Welsh Pony and Cob Society of America (WPCSA). The
WPCSA gave awards to the high scoring
Welsh and Half Welsh ponies in the regular and green divisions.
Just for Ponies donated padded leather halters with engraved
brass plates to these winners and the champions also received a trophy,
neck sash and $250 stipend for the rider. Read the Welsh pony results and see

Janet Lewis and her Shetland Pony, AGS Cappuccino
Who says that ponies are just for kids? Janet Lewis, who is 74
years young, will strongly debate that point because she's
having the time of her life showing her Modern Shetland pony,
AGS Cappuccino. Janet, a mother of eight and grandmother of
sixteen is from Alva, Florida and has successfully shown Capp, as he's affectionately called, to many wins across the
country. For the past two years, Janet and Capp have won
blue ribbons at many shows including the prestigious
Shetland Congress.
See More Photos of Janet and Capp at the
shows. Janet grew up riding a Morgan and always had a passion
and love for horse shows, even though she didn't compete much as
a youth. When her oldest child was two years old, she bought a
spotted Classic Shetland named Aloysius that the breeder didn't
want because of the markings. Janet used this 10 hand pony to
teach all of her children to ride and they knew their diagonals
and leads by the time they were three or four. Her children went
on to Saddle Ponies and American

Saddlebreds, riding at places like Madison Square Garden,
Louisville and the Kansas City American Royal. Under Janet's
instruction and training, they dominated many divisions and won
enough awards to fill a trophy room. In 1982 tragedy struck and
Janet had to have major surgery due to a brain tumor. Her long
term prognosis? She would be in a wheel chair for the rest of
her life. She and her veterinarian husband, Jonathan sold the
animal hospital that they had run together and they moved
from New Hampshire to Florida. Against all odds and through a lot of perseverance and
hard work, Janet slowly rehabilitated herself. About
three years ago, she thought about getting a pony again even
though she'd been without horses for 25 years and her husband
encouraged her. She contacted
The
American Shetland Pony Club and through an ad in one of their
journals, found the pony she was looking for. It was love at
first site even though he came out of
the stall on his hind legs the first time she saw him. She loved his pizzazz! His name goes
perfectly with his beautiful bay color, white socks and white on
his tail. He was quite a handful (and sometimes still is) but
Janet's determination and love for this pony and sport have made
both of them winners and an inspiration for many. Read more
about Janet and Capp
on her web site that shows lots photos of them competing at
shows plus pictures of her friends and family.

Gina Muré and Earl Gray the
Trick Pony
There aren't a lot of ponies that have a resume, but Earl Gray,
a 10 hand pony from the Scottsdale AZ area, has quite an
impressive one. He's performed and given cart rides at school
functions, charity events, private parties, kids parties and
he's even waiting for his debut on the Tonight show. His list of
tricks includes Kisses, Hugs, Yoga stretch, Shaking hands, Camel
bow, Playing soccer, Hoola hoop/bumping butts, Circus bow,
Taking a nap, Sitting up, Crossing his front legs and Fetching. His
owner and trainer, Gina Muré, tells
about his history: "Earl was standing around a horse barn
with no job. I noticed him one day and asked about him.
The owner's trainer had never got around to working with him.
He was roughly 3 years old. The owner told me she wanted a
good home for him (free) so of course I said I'd take him.
I had worked with mainly Arabians for over 12 years and took him
for the fun of it. He was SO easy

to work
with. Taught him to be ridden, drive, and do numerous tricks.
He loves to spin and 'bump butts', which we turned into a hoola
- hoop trick and he even fetches! At the time, it was all for
fun and then my friends who had kids asked me if we'd come to
their parties. One thing led to another and now he has a
complete resume! We've volunteered to take part in The Black
Stallion Literacy Program here in Scottsdale for a couple
years, been part of a Summer Kid's Camp Program at the Hyatt,
visited inner-city schools, and SO much more! (just last week
he was the entertainment for a group of graduating therapy
dogs!) He is my pony-angel and I can't express the joy he
brings. The best things in life truly are free! (I dreamed
of having a pony or horse growing up in Chicago, but that never
happened. Earl came into my life over 5 years ago when I was in
my early 30's -- all I can say is this pony was WELL worth the
wait!!)." Visit Gina and Earl's website,
